We ve talked here before about pothole season Now we show you exactly what that looks like Through automated data-gathering at Times of San Diego we re taking a look at the city s pothole repair requests where they happen when they happen and how long they take to get fixed Every week requests for pothole repairs stream in to San Diego s Get It Done operation system You might have even made a request yourself by phone or through the city s app This map shows you what that evidence looks like in real-life Just press the Play button at the bottom Having trouble seeing the map on mobile Try opening it here This map shows the downtown area but you can zoom out to see the whole city and zoom in to see each overview in detail Press pause to freeze it and explore The timeline shows the -month period from July to June A dot appears on the day a pothole gets released and disappears the day it is communicated as fixed As you ll see from the timeline and from the increasing number of dots reports get a lot heavier in the spring We ve color-coded the dots by timeframe A large number of reports get closed in a single day But a sparse linger for weeks or months The darker the dot the longer it took A limited caveats about the map details As of the beginning of July a limited potholes stated last year are still not showing as fixed That s why there are still dots at the end of the timeline These dots show where people communicated a pothole not the actual existence of a pothole So it s realizable multiple reports are about the same issue And it s practicable specific of these reports are in error The input starts with potholes shared in June or later There may have been potholes that got communicated before that date but weren t repaired until later Those reports won t show up on this map When do the majority potholes happen in San Diego You might call winter and spring pothole season As a reminder here s an updated version of our chart on the last four years of pothole reports function use strict window addEventListener message function a if void a statistics datawrapper-height var e document querySelectorAll iframe for var t in a details datawrapper-height for var r i r e i i if r contentWindow a source var d a figures datawrapper-height t px r style height d Want to see every pothole in the city of San Diego Here s the whole map Are you seeing more potholes this year Have you had an experience with requesting a repair Let us know at statistics timesofsandiego com Neighborhoods go by a multitude of names and San Diego has several of them Here s how we break them down
